James was born on August 18th, 1844 in Lislea.

• Birth Notes

  Age given as 51 in 1901 census makes him born in 1850 but his Date of Birth in 1st Kilrea Presbyterian Church records is 1844. 

James' father was John [1858-TheMeen,Plots20&21] Gordon and his mother was Agnes "Nancy" McCook.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas [1858-TheMeen,Plots 25&26] Gordon and Catherine Carmichael; his maternal grandparents were James McCook and Mary Ann McIlhouse. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Robert, Margaret, Marianne, Catherine and Catherine.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 83 on July 7th, 1928 in Lislea.

• Death Notes

  Death certificate gives him dying aged 84 (=Date of Birth of 1844) of "Cerebral Embolism 4 years Cardiac Failure", a farmer, of Lislea.  Thomas Gordon son Lislea informant.

• General Notes

  Lived in Lislea in 1901.  1st Kilrea Presbyterian Church records have a James Gordon born to a John Gordon of Lislea with a brother Robert John so this must be him. However, his mother's name is given as Nancy Cooke, not Agnes as given on his father's  gravestone. Father given as John Gordon in marriage entry in Finvoy Presbyterian Church. Witnessed by John Gordon.
  
  GVRBs:
  - John Gordon scored out of Plots 20 & 21 to Reps in 1870.  reps scored out to James, with John in brackets) in 1874.  The name in brackets is to distinguish this James from another James.  This fits with the death of John Gordon in 1869 and the property passing to his son, James, my great grandfather.
  - Buildings rate increased from 10 shillings to 25 shillings in 1892, suggesting a new house was built
  - No change til the end of the book in 1929.
