William was born in 1884 in West Calder.1   William's father was Thomas Walker and his mother was Janet Thomson.  His maternal grandparents were Robert Pollock and Janet Catherine Thomson. He had a brother and four sisters, named Thomas, Janet, Margaret, Christina and Mary.  He was the oldest of the six children.
