Russel was born in 1897 in Alberta.1 2 Russel's father was John Archibald Turner and his mother was Ellen (Minnie) Wilhelmina Dawson. His paternal grandparents were Peter Turner and Catherine Fotheringham Archibald; his maternal grandparents were Peter Dawson and Janet Turner. He had a brother and two sisters, named Dawson, Jessie and Nellie. He was the oldest of the four children.-
