David's father was Andrew Tulloch and his mother was Helen Hadston.  His paternal grandparents were Andrew Tulloch and Margaret Hastie; his maternal grandparents were John Hadston and Isobel Pringle. He had two brothers and three sisters, named John, Adam, Margaret, Tulloch and Margaret.  He was the oldest of the six children.
