David's father was David Taylor and his mother was Mary Ann MacDonald Hodge. His paternal grandparents were Andrew Taylor and Ann Scoffield. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Andrew, William, Robert, James, Annie, Euphemia and Jessie. He was the third youngest of the eight children.
