Robert's father was Michael Towers Steven and his mother was Mary Wylie Allison. His paternal grandparents were Archibald Steven and Ann Towers. He had five brothers and a sister, named Archibald, Willliam, Thomas, James, John and Elizabeth. He was the second oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 59 in December 1964 in New York City. He was buried in New York City.³
