Jane's father was James Shaw and her mother was Jane Wason. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Shaw and Jean Scoffield; her maternal grandparents were Hugh Wason and Agnes Hall. She had five brothers and six sisters, named Robert, Thomas, James, Hugh, David, Agnes, Jane, Helen, Jeanie, Shaw and Maggie. She was the third oldest of the twelve children. She died due to a medical problem, Dropsy, duration 2 weeks, at the age of 1 on January 27th, 1857 in Dalmellington. She was buried in Dalmellington.²
