Helen's father was Thomas Reeder and her mother was Helen Binnie. Her paternal grandparents were John Reeder and Janet Hill Cunningham. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Alexander, William, Ann, Janet and Bythiniar. She was the third youngest of the seven children. She died at the age of 89 in 1950 in Hamilton.
