Jonathan's father was Samuel Pitt and his mother was Annie Laidlaw.  His paternal grandparents were John Pitt and Helen McMurren. He had four brothers and a sister, named William, John, Samuel, David and Mary Ann.  He was the oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 78 on January 25th, 1950 in Glasgow.
