John's father was Samuel Pitt and his mother was Annie Laidlaw. His paternal grandparents were John Pitt and Helen McMurren. He had four brothers and a sister, named Jonathan, William, Samuel, David and Mary Ann. He was the third oldest of the six children. He died at the age of 74 on January 25th, 1950 in Glasgow. He was buried in Catrine.
