Duncan's father was Alexander McQueen and his mother was Julia Carmichael.  His paternal grandparents were John McQueen and McDougall; his maternal grandparents were Lachlan Carmichael and Mary McIntosh. He had three brothers and two sisters, named John, Alexander, Allan, Mary and Catherine.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
