Donald's father was John McPherson and his mother was Margaret Rennie.  His maternal grandparents were David Rennie and Agnes Miller. He had five brothers and three sisters, named David, Alexander, John, Andrew, James, Margaret, Agnes and Mary.  He was the oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 1 in 1871 in Anderston.
