Alison's father was George McLelland and her mother was Anne McMurran. Her maternal grandparents were David McMurran and Allison McClymont. She had five brothers and four sisters, named George, David, William, Matthew, Jonathan, Marion, Annie, Agnes and Jane. She was the oldest of the ten children. She died at the age of 62 in 1926 in Old Kilpatrick.
