John was born in 1908 in Paisley.1  John's father was John McLauchlan and his mother was Rebecca Thomson Lafferty.  His maternal grandparents were Joseph Lafferty and Margaret French. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Peter, Joseph, Margaret and Rebecca.  He was the youngest of the five children.
