Thomas' father was James Speirs McGallan and his mother was Mary Jane Caruthers. His maternal grandparents were Thomas Caruthers and Cathrine Roney. He had three brothers and a sister, named David, John, James and Elizabeth. He was the oldest of the five children. He died at the age of 81 in 1968 in Glasgow.
