Richard's father was Richard Marshall and his mother was Marion Taylor.  His paternal grandparents were James Marshall and Elizabeth Hamilton. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named James, Ebenezer, John, Thomas, James, George, James, Marion and Elizabeth.  He was the fourth youngest of the ten children.
