William's father was Alexander Mann and his mother was Elizabeth Connell. His paternal grandparents were Robert Mann and Agnes Campbell Fraser. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Robert, Alexander, James, Peter, Robert, Margaret, Agnes and Elizabeth. He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.
