Robert's father was Alexander Mann and his mother was Elizabeth Connell. His paternal grandparents were Robert Mann and Agnes Campbell Fraser. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Robert, Alexander, James, William, Peter, Margaret, Agnes and Elizabeth. He was the youngest of the nine children. He died at the age of 60 in 1945.
