Robert's father was Alexander Mann and his mother was Elizabeth Connell. His paternal grandparents were Robert Mann and Agnes Campbell Fraser. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Alexander, James, William, Peter, Robert, Margaret, Agnes and Elizabeth. He was the oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 2 in 1866 in Kilmarnock.
