Isabella's father was William MacLean and her mother was Margaret Knox.  Her maternal grandparents were John Knox and Margaret Stevenson. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Charles, John, Mary and Margaret.  She was the second oldest of the five children.  She died at the age of 12 in 1883 in Cumbernauld.
