Charles' father was William MacLean and his mother was Margaret Knox.  His maternal grandparents were John Knox and Margaret Stevenson. He had a brother and three sisters, named John, Mary, Isabella and Margaret.  He was the second youngest of the five children.  He died at the age of 41 in November 1919 in Cumberland.
