Elizabeth's father was Joseph Lafferty and her mother was Margaret French.  Her paternal grandparents were John Lafferty and Mary Ann Davidson. She had five brothers and four sisters, named John, Joseph, Joseph, Malcolm, Lewis, Mary, Margaret, Mary and Rebecca.  She was the fifth youngest of the ten children.
