Michael's father was Archibald Kerr and his mother was Euphemia Towers. His paternal grandparents were Andrew Kerr and Agnes Harley; his maternal grandparents were Michael Towers and Janet Mathie. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Andrew, Archibald, Janet, Agnes, Annie, Agnes and Euphemia. He was the second youngest of the eight children. He had a half-sister named Margaret. He died at the age of 1 in 1877 in Paisley.
