William's father was John Kennedy and his mother was Rachel Robertson. His maternal grandparents were John Robertson and Agnes Gourlay. He had a brother and three sisters, named Archibald, Margaret, Euphemia and Margaret. He was the second youngest of the five children. He died at the age of 72 on December 18th, 1958 in Ayrshire.
