John's father was James Henderson and his mother was Jean Aitken.  His paternal grandparents were Archibald Henderson and Elizabeth Marshall; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Aitken and Margaret Addie. He had three brothers and five sisters, named James, Michael, Robert, Jean, Janet, Jean, Margaret and Helen.  He was the third oldest of the nine children.
