Hall's father was Hall Hamilton and his mother was Margaret (Maggie) Brotherton. His paternal grandparents were Hall Hamilton and Janet McKellar. He had six brothers named John, Robert, Thomas, Hugh, Fred and William. He was the oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 81 in 1955 in Paisley.
