Fred's father was Hall Hamilton and his mother was Margaret (Maggie) Brotherton. His paternal grandparents were Hall Hamilton and Janet McKellar. He had six brothers named Hall, John, Robert, Thomas, Hugh and William. He was the second youngest of the seven children.
