John's father was James Gilfillan and his mother was Rachel Steen.  His paternal grandparents were William Gilfillan and <Unknown>; his maternal grandparents were Joseph Steen and Jane Devenny. He had three sisters named Jane, Mary and Rachel.  He was the second youngest of the four children.  He died at the age of 26 on December 22nd, 1897.²
