Jane's father was James Gilfillan and her mother was Rachel Steen.  Her paternal grandparents were William Gilfillan and <Unknown>; her maternal grandparents were Joseph Steen and Jane Devenny. She had a brother and two sisters, named John, Mary and Rachel.  She was the oldest of the four children.
