John's father was William Flinn and his mother was Agnes Lawson. His paternal grandparents were William Flinn and Mary Carson. He had a brother and seven sisters, named William, Mary, Helen, Jean, Agnes, Margaret, Agnes and Janet. He was the second youngest of the nine children.
