Janet's father was William Flinn and her mother was Agnes Lawson. Her paternal grandparents were William Flinn and Mary Carson. She had two brothers and six sisters, named William, John, Mary, Helen, Jean, Agnes, Margaret and Agnes. She was the youngest of the nine children. She died at the age of 3 in 1881 in Kilmarnock.
