Janet's father was Robert English and her mother was Agnes Savage. Her maternal grandparents were Hugh Savage and Margaret Dickson. She had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Samuel, Margaret and Elsie. She was the second oldest of the five children. She died at the age of 94 in 1985 in Falkirk.
