Robert's father was Alexander Drennan and his mother was Cecillia Towers. His maternal grandparents were William Tours and Margaret Colquhoun. He had five brothers and a sister, named William, Alexander, John, James, Walter and Maggie. He died from a stroke, cerebral haemorrage, 1 day, paralysis agitans, 15 years, at the age of 75 on December 31st, 1946 in Natal. He was cremated in Durban.³³
