Alexander's father was Hugh Cuthbert and his mother was Charlotte Robertson. His maternal grandparents were George Robertson and Martha Carlton McGloughlane. He had three brothers and a sister, named Hugh, George, John and Martha. He was the second youngest of the five children. He died at the age of 3 on December 9th, 1873 in Galston.
