Jane's father was Thomas Caruthers and her mother was Cathrine Roney. Her maternal grandparents were James Roney and Catherine Balmer. She had two sisters named Mary and Catherine. She was the youngest of the three children. She died at the age of 65 in 1925 in Kelvin.
