Janet's father was James McNab Brash and her mother was Jeanie Gold. Her maternal grandparents were William Gold and Mary Drummond. She had a brother and two sisters, named James, Margaret and Mary. She was the youngest of the four children. She had three half-brothers and three half-sisters, named David, William, Robert, Jeanie, Barbara and Elizabeth. She died at the age of 98 in 2000 in Helensburgh.
