James' father was James McNab Brash and his mother was Jeanie Gold. His maternal grandparents were William Gold and Mary Drummond. He had three sisters named Margaret, Mary and Janet. He was the second oldest of the four children. He had three half-brothers and three half-sisters, named David, William, Robert, Jeanie, Barbara and Elizabeth.
