David's father was Alexander Brash and his mother was Janet Crawford.  His paternal grandparents were David Brash and Margaret Easton. He had four brothers and two sisters, named David, Alexander, Thomas, Thomas, Brash and Sibella.  He was the youngest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 35 in 1858 in Edinburgh.
