Robert's father was Hugh Borthwick and his mother was Margaret Brash.  His maternal grandparents were David Brash and Margaret Easton. He had five brothers and three sisters, named George, James, John, Hugh, Ramsay, Isabel, Susan and Margaret.  He was the third youngest of the nine children.
