Isabel's father was Hugh Borthwick and her mother was Margaret Brash.  Her maternal grandparents were David Brash and Margaret Easton. She had six brothers and two sisters, named George, James, John, Hugh, Robert, Ramsay, Susan and Margaret.  She was the third oldest of the nine children.
