George's father was Hugh Borthwick and his mother was Margaret Brash.  His maternal grandparents were David Brash and Margaret Easton. He had five brothers and three sisters, named James, John, Hugh, Robert, Ramsay, Isabel, Susan and Margaret.  He was the oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 76 on April 2nd, 1867 in Cramond.  He was buried in Kirkliston.^3 2
