James' father was George Borthwick and his mother was Janet Cuthbertson.  His paternal grandparents were Hugh Borthwick and Margaret Brash. He had two brothers and a sister, named Hugh, George and Jesse.  He was the second oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 10 on February 7th, 1826.  He was buried in Kirkliston.^1 1
