Alexander's father was David Alexander Auld and his mother was Mary Fraser. His maternal grandparents were Alexander Fraser and Isabella Adam. He had two brothers and two sisters, named John, Adam, Isabella and Jane. He was the second youngest of the five children. He died at the age of 92 in 1987 in Kilmarnock.
