John's father was Thomas Aitken and his mother was Margaret Addie.  His paternal grandparents were James Aitken and Margaret Crauford; his maternal grandparents were John Addie and Janet Reid. He had two brothers and seven sisters, named John, James, Janet, Margaret, Mary, Christian, Jean, Helen and Elizabeth.
