Helen's father was Thomas Aitken and her mother was Margaret Addie.  Her paternal grandparents were James Aitken and Margaret Crauford; her maternal grandparents were John Addie and Janet Reid. She had three brothers and six sisters, named John, John, James, Janet, Margaret, Mary, Christian, Jean and Elizabeth.
