Thomas was born about 1780 in Gloucester County, NJ.  Thomas' father was Thomas Marshall and his mother was Ann Pease.  His paternal grandparents were Randall Marshall and Hannah Chew; his maternal grandparents were David Pease and Elizabeth. He had four brothers and a sister, named John, William, Randall, David and Rebecca.  He was the fifth oldest of the six children.
