Robert was born in 1751.  Robert's father was Turner Thornton in Craven Yorks Snowden and his mother was Ann Cowgill. He had six brothers and five sisters, named James, John, William, Joseph, Turner, Thomas, Mary, Ann, Joyce, Sarah and Sarah.  He is the fourth oldest of the twelve children.
