John was born in 1746.  John's father was Turner Thornton in Craven Yorks Snowden and his mother was Ann Cowgill. He had six brothers and five sisters, named James, William, Robert, Joseph, Turner, Thomas, Mary, Ann, Joyce, Sarah and Sarah.  He was the second oldest of the twelve children.
