William was born in 1796.  William's father was William Marshall Sr and his mother was Mary C Beans Bane Banes.  His paternal grandparents were James Marshall and Jane Lindsey; his maternal grandparents were John Beans Bane Burns Banes and Elizabeth Paxton Shaw. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Jane "Creative Jane", James M, Phineas Paxton, John, Elizabeth and Hester Lemon Layman.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 74 in 1870.
