John was born on May 18th, 1801.  John's father was William Marshall Sr and his mother was Mary C Beans Bane Banes.  His paternal grandparents were James Marshall and Jane Lindsey; his maternal grandparents were John Beans Bane Burns Banes and Elizabeth Paxton Shaw. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Jane "Creative Jane", James M, William, Phineas Paxton, Elizabeth and Hester Lemon Layman.  He was the sixth oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 69 on July 17th, 1870.
